Per class discussion, the group wants to:
1. Form a mission statement
2. Identify and read academic resources
3. Identify possible key informants, allies, and advocates.
1. The group will use the comments on this post to brainstorm mission statements. We have discussed wanting to move focus from body image, which was discussed initially, to a broader focus on self-esteem. This will allow the incorporation of body image but allow other important topics to be discussed as well.
2. The group has already begun work on finding academic sources with our blog last week. If we haven't read the articles posted by other group members yet, that is a goal.
3. As a group we were able to discuss a few resources that could help to better understand creating a program to present when we do a self-esteem focused event with the YWCA. Coming up at Leslie's practicum is a presentation by the YWCA to students on similar topics to ours. Leslie is going to check with her field practicum supervisor to see if our group members could visit during these. Emily knows someone named Jenny that coordinates girls' groups in the community with kids and teens. She is going to contact Jenny to see if there is a time she could meet with the group to discuss ideas and techniques.
All group members participated in discussion together on our project this week.
It think because the YWCA serves two groups (the women living in the shelter AND women in the community at large) we need to make sure to include both groups in our mission statement.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think it's important that our mission statement emphasize a community dialogue. As we've talked about in class, we don't want to act like we have the knowledge and are disseminating it. Instead, we want to not only get input prior to the event we are planning from the community, but structure the event in a such a way that input from those attending is welcome and prioritized.
I agree with Emily's comment about making sure that our mission statement includes all women in the community at large from all different age groups and that there are many factors that play into how women feel about themselves. I think that when we do the event we should narrow it down to a couple topics or maybe even do a survey about what women feel impact their self esteem the most whether it be body image, economic status or culture. Different cultures have different ideas of what beauty is so I think it's also important to pay attention to that.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is a great idea to do a survey of our population in order to have a more focused mission. Doing a survey will help us better understand the needs of our population. I think self-esteem is am umbrella to other problems, and we could narrow down 2-4 topics to focus on.
ReplyDeleteI have talked to the teacher who would let us do the survey and they said it would be fine. I just need to talk to my supervisor to get the okay after we have created the survey. We would be able to survey 1st-8th grade.
